Master Plan (Towards 2040)

Our College Master Plan (Towards 2040), developed in conjunction with Wilson Architects, builds upon Lourdes Hill College’s rich heritage as one of Brisbane’s oldest independent Catholic secondary schools, whilst delivering a clear vision to develop, strengthen and optimise our future.

Approved in 2021 and underpinned by the College’s approach to education, the Master Plan makes the most of our unique location, whilst creating new and improved places and spaces for learning and emphasising the values of Good Samaritan Education that support holistic living.

Key Themes and Targeted Outcomes

Over multiple stages, the College Master Plan will deliver to our community:

Theme
Key Master Plan Outcomes
Scholastic + Pedagogical MappingConsolidation of faculties to create stronger precincts within the College clearly defining the Learning Framework on site. A combination of purpose-built and refurbished buildings will support the delivery of each of these precincts.
Pastoral CareLocating of Pastoral Care groups together, helping to define individual House identities whilst also allocating each House a dedicated external space to gather. The Master Plan dedicates 6-8 General Learning Spaces per House.
NavigationA new front entry will improve the street appeal, whilst a new pedestrian spine will improve wayfinding and access across the College campus. An extension to the Riverwalk will provide further connection to the river and celebrate the unique aspects of the campus.
Covered ConnectivityThe Plan delivers a built form strategy of lifting new buildings above the ground to create a series of undercrofts, whilst the new (covered) pedestrian spine will provide weather protection and create new social spaces to contribute to College life, culture and values.
Lines of SecurityNew car parking and drop-off facilities will be created to support safe access to the College campus for students, staff and visitors. In addition, new fencing and landscaping along both Hawthorne Road and Virginia Avenue will improve and simplify security and enhance street appeal.
Landscaped Edges + Green SpaceExtensive landscaping will create green spaces for social use and mitigate glare, shade, and weather effects.
Open Space + GatheringNew open spaces will be created for socialising, learning, gathering, recreation and reflection and will celebrate heritage elements of the campus and the history of the College.
Public + Parent DestinationsNew and reconfigured access points will provide opportunities for separate public access to College facilities and spaces without impacting the function or security of the College. In this regard, Parent and visitor accessible areas will be relocated to the perimeter of the school for ease of access.
Traffic + Service VehiclesVehicle and pedestrian access to the College will be streamlined and designed with the goal of enhancing onsite resources and alleviating the impact of College-related traffic on the local neighbourhood.

Our Stage 1 Projects

NEW COLLEGE ENTRY & ADMINISTRATION CENTRE

Completion – August 2024

With a revised boundary design and new architecture enhancing the existing Good Samaritan Centre, our dedicated pedestrian entry at the corner of Hawthorne Road and Virginia Avenue now provides secure, safe, and well-marked access for all members of our College community.

The new administration centre houses the Main College Reception, Student Reception, Sickbay, Meeting Rooms, and Uniform Shop, along with a dedicated Junior School Administration Hub.

The partial enclosure of the Good Samaritan Centre Level 1 veranda offers students, staff, and visitors a safer and more convenient covered entry point into the College Hall.

SASEBO BUILDING

Completion – November 2024

Our four-story Sasebo building features a major activity-based undercroft space and three levels of general learning classrooms. The 225sqm multi-use space on the top floor supports the College’s signature wellness and learning programs.

Integrated with our existing Bacolod building, Sasebo improves wayfinding and open space, marking the first step in establishing a dedicated central pedestrian spine through the College.

The additional learning spaces are now part of the College Curriculum timetable and will support future capacity when classrooms undergo refurbishment or demolition as part of the ongoing Master Plan strategy.

ONSITE BUS AND PARENT PICKUP & DROPOFF FACILITY

Completion – December 2024

Our new onsite traffic facility enhances safety for students and vehicles accessing and exiting our campus, reducing reliance on Virginia Avenue and Hawthorne Road for parking and bus activity during peak pickup and drop-off times.

The facility was created by recasting the lower car park levels to support onsite drop-off options adjacent to Virginia Avenue, while also providing dedicated visitor parking to serve the new Administration Centre/Reception.

A covered waiting area, constructed with a cantilevered slab, now offers shelter for students, with an activity space and playground for Years 5 & Year 6 students located above.

YEAR 5 & YEAR 6 JUNIOR LEARNING PRECINCT

Completion – December 2024

Our fully refurbished Santa Teresa building now serves as the primary learning space for Year 5 & Year 6 students. The Junior Learning Precinct includes six purpose-built general learning classrooms supported by two multi-purpose classrooms.

Dedicated activity spaces, including in-room reading nooks and breakout lounges in spacious adjoining corridors, enhance the learning environment. The lower level of Santa Teresa provides direct access to the Sasebo undercroft.

The project also delivers dedicated Junior School toilets, along with hardscape and landscape improvements that enhance outdoor lunch and play areas, including the Junior School playground.
