|Jess awarded Navy Cadet Medal - 10 October 2014|
Congratulations to Jessica Heaney who was recently awarded a Navy Cadet Medal at the Navy Cadets’ 60th Anniversary Mess Dinner at Chermside RSL Club.
Jessica, who is originally from the United Kingdom, was asked by her Commanding Officer to give a speech at the event about her experiences adapting to life in a new country.
Jessica, a self-confessed joker, said that she was nervous about delivering a speech in such a serious and formal context.
However, she said that her light-hearted speech “blew up in a beautiful way” as she told laughter-inducing anecdotes about coming to Australia, and becoming an Australian citizen.
After the speech, she was asked to return to the stage by Warrant Officer Martin Holzberger, who said that he had “never seen such bravery”, before awarding her the Navy Cadet Medal.
Jessica, who is about to complete Year 12, is considering a career as a navy medic.
She said that it was encouraging to see that there has been a growing number of female navy cadets in recent years, and looks to her her female Commanding Officer as a source of inspiration.
