| Middle School Students embrace Global STARS House Project - 20 May 2019|
The Middle School students of Lourdes Hill College have enthusiastically embraced the Global STARS House Project introduced this year. This Project aims to not only teach students about global issues but also give them skills in designing, testing and evaluating possible solutions.
The focus of the Project is on developing capabilities such as investigation, collaboration, communication, creativity and problem solving, growing requirements for active and successful participants in the workforce of the future. The core of the Global STARS House Project is:
• Student driven
• Technology rich
• Relevant globally; and
• Skill based
The introductory year of the Project is Year 7 where students will explore eSafety, robotics and film design. They will create a short film that will encourage Middle School students to use a logical thinking process before interacting online hence avoiding eSafety issues. Students will get to know themselves as learners and understand how to work collaboratively with others who may have different ideas and perspectives.
The development year of the Project is Year 8 where students will further explore eSafety but also embark on skills in digital manipulation through Photoshop and computational thinking through app development. Students will then develop their problem-solving skills to create an app that will help make the world of Social Media a more positive experience for everyone.
Year 9 is designed to draw together and refine the skills learnt in previous years in preparation for the Creative Spectacular in Year 10. Students will work collaboratively as a whole House to create a solution for a Global Challenge while further developing their technical skills in web design and chosen areas of interest. Focus will be placed on evaluation skills throughout the Project in preparation for senior requirements. For example, this week as part of their project, Year 9 Beck House students explored how technology could assist refugees in the community by visiting St Pauls Community Centre as part of their research process.
All House solutions will be proudly displayed in Term 4 at the Global STARS Project Expo.
