Mirragin Moments: Close the Gap - 18 April 2017

Every year, the third Thursday in March is Close the Gap Day. This is a national day of awareness aiming to close the health and life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in Australia. At Lourdes Hill College, this day is a big deal! The STAR service group girls and the Mirragin students work together to organise an event that brings people together, shares information and promotes meaningful actions in support of achieving Indigenous health equality by 2030.

The girls excelled in their efforts this year. The GSC was full of girls from every year level showing their support by joining in the games, painting a banner, signing petitions and sharing their thoughts on speech bubbles or in the yarning circle with our Elder-in-Residence, Aunty Joan. A special mention must go to our newest and youngest STAR and Mirragin members for helping to make the day such a great success and Temanu O’Brien- Schmidt (Year 9), for her fabulous work weaving stars. Thank you, girls! We once again held a sausage sizzle which raised $200 to support the Santa Teresa remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory.

It is so wonderful to witness reconciliation in action and the fabulous response we receive every year from staff and students.
